On 8 December 2015, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers ('IMechE') Student Chapter of TAR UC was inaugurated in a simple and yet memorable ceremony. It was held in Dewan Kuliah E and attended by about 20 staff members and more than 80 students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The IMechE is one of the fastest growing professional engineering institutions in the UK with global operations. It is a registered charitable organisation and licensed to appoint professional engineers. A Member of IMechE is qualified to register with Engineering Council ('EC') UK as a Chartered Engineer ('CEng'). In Malaysia, IMechE started in 1997 with the setting up of the Malaysia branch and the Malaysia Young Member Section ('YMS'). YMS actively assists and guides institutions of higher learning to set up IMechE Student Chapter. Currently, 13 universities in Malaysia have student chapters set up in their campus and TAR UC is the 14th to have established a student chapter establishing a tangible link between our engineering students and the institution. It is commendable that with the good effort of TAR UC students and staff, TAR UC is the quickest  institution in Malaysia to get the student chapter formed.

Having a student chapter provides:

  • An IMechE contact point at university
  • A communication platform for students and academics to get their voice heard in the wider engineering community
  • Support students throughout their studies
  • Training up student volunteers and their engagement with local community
  • Sponsorship of RM1,000 per year as subsidy for student activities
  • Awards for Best Student and Best Project Prize (for Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering students)

The event was officially launched by our invited guests Ir Mathew Thomas, Chairman, IMechE Malaysia Branch, Mr Chen Khin Fei, Chairman, Youth Malaysia Section, IMechE Malaysia Branch, Dr K Murali Kumaraguru, Head of Material and Corrosion, DNV GL - Oil & Gas, accompanied by Assoc Prof Dr Yip Mum Wai, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment Ms Lim Joo Eng, Academic Liaison Office personnel, IMechE Student Chapter and Associate Dean, Department of Mechanical Engineering, TAR UC and Mandy Ng Yen Ming, Protem Chairman, IMechE Student Chapter, TAR UC.
