The phrase “hearts of gold” perfectly encapsulates the efforts of TAR UC students from various Diploma programmes undertaking the Civic Consciousness and Volunteerism course this past semester who raised funds for several charitable organisations. The fruits of their labour were seen during the cheque presentation ceremony which was held on 19 January 2018 at the Auditorium, Bangunan Tun Tan Siew Sin, Kuala Lumpur Main Campus.

Through the efforts of approximately 2,000 students from five faculties, the fundraising activities successfully raised a total of RM134,529.50 within a few weeks!

In attendance during the cheque presentation ceremony was Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok, President of TAR UC, TAR UC Vice Presidents – Ms Kho Sok Kee, Assoc Prof Say Sook Kwan and Dr Chook Ka Joo, Ms Karthiyani A/p Shanmugam, Head of the Centre for Nation Building and Languages, TAR UC senior officials, representatives from the charity organisations who are the beneficiaries of the funds as well as TAR UC staff and students.

“We are aware that there are many in our society who are burdened with some form of difficulty and their hardships are usually borne in stoic silence,” remarked Datuk Dr Tan during his opening speech. “The funds raised by our students are not just a donation given out to the needy, but it also means making a difference in the lives of others.”

“Despite not knowing or seeing the actual people who will be receiving the funds you have raised, you remain enthusiastic, motivated and go above and beyond of what is expected of you to do your part to make someone else’s life better. Keep up the good work!” encouraged Datuk Dr Tan.

A total of 16 organisations and the TAR UC Student Welfare Fund were presented with a cheque by Datuk Dr Tan during the ceremony. Apart from that, TAR UC’s Student Representative Council (‘SRC’) and the Chinese Language Society also presented cheques to Datuk Dr Tan as a contribution towards the TARC Education Foundation for the construction of the Student Centre. The money donated by the SRC was raised through ticket sales from the Prom Night 2017, which was held last semester.

During the ceremony, representatives from a few organisations namely – Candy Pencil Project, Yayasan Sunbeams, Rumah Charis and Semenanjung Orang Asli (‘SEMOA’), shared about their organisation and how the money raised and donated by TAR UC students  would benefit their respective organisations.
