TAR UC’s grand 50th Anniversary celebration kicked off with the International Education Forum themed ‘Staying Relevant in the Next 50 Years’. Organised by the Centre for Continuing and Professional Education (‘CPE’), the forum was held in the morning of 16 March 2019 which attracted more than 100 attendees. The forum was divided into 2 sub-themes which were ‘Changing Roles of Universities: Shaping of Technology’ and ‘Sustainability in Higher Education’.

In his welcome address, Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UC, shared with the audience the relevance of the conference’s theme in today’s education landscape. “The two sub-themes are very timely and are also topics of high interest due to the many changes that are happening around us. Such phenomenon is not something our predecessors had gone through. Due to the disruptive technologies we are experiencing in our lives today under the 4th Industrial Revolution, the roles of universities are also changing. There is a famous Chinese saying which states “When there are challenges, there are also opportunities”. This saying is very apt for us as educators to look at these changes as opportunities,” he said.

Each sub-theme of the forum commenced after a number of traditional dance performances by TAR UC students. For the first one, Prof Ir Dr Lee was one of the speakers where he spoke on ‘The Roles of Universities in Face of the 4th Industrial Revolution’.
