TAR UMT continues to solidify its reputation as a powerhouse in professional competitions, with its students emerging as Champions in both the Individual and Team Categories of the 2025 Deloitte Tax Challenge (national level) and Champion in the 2025 Deloitte Audit Business Challenge.
In the Deloitte Tax Challenge, Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) graduate Ng Yew Sheng clinched the Champion and Best Presenter titles in the Individual Category, while Lim Li Yuin and Karanjot Singh secured the Merit Prize. The Champion Team comprised Ng Yew Sheng, Lim Li Yuin, Koh Ching Nghi and Genevere Foo Wen Shun, with Yew Sheng and Ching Nghi awarded Best Presenters. Yew Sheng will represent the country in both the individual and team categories, while Ching Nghi will compete in the team category at the regional level of the competition.
For his achievement in the Individual Category, Yew Sheng attributed his success to rigorous preparation, supportive lecturers, and a disciplined mindset. “I also must highlight the dedication of my lecturers, Mr Michael Yeo Thiam Swee and Ms Suzzanne Poh Shuh Chen, who journeyed with me from my very first competition. Their dedication is a big contributing factor for my success,” he said.
Ching Nghi, on the other hand, shared that her team’s victory came as a pleasant surprise, considering the team was newly formed.
“We knew each other through previous events and competitions, so it was not a surprise that we came together to form a team, with the approval of our lecturer who recognised each of our strengths. We started our preparations via online meetings and then, we began to have physical discussions. Looking back, having discussions with the whole team present was not only memorable, but motivating as each of us can sense the team’s synergy and enthusiasm. This helped us dive deeper into complex topics and strengthened our teamwork.”
Meanwhile, the TAR UMT Champion team at the Deloitte Audit Business Challenge 2025 comprised Quek Wan Qi, Bryan Sim Myng Roong and Ong Lay Hong.
Bryan, described the win as ‘an extremely rewarding moment.’ “Our foundation in auditing and financial reporting helped us analyse real-world scenarios, while teamwork ensured we stayed coordinated and confident.”
Bryan’s contribution centred on audit procedures and review, complemented by teammates who excelled in technical analysis and presentation. “One of the most memorable questions we faced required analysing key audit focus areas to identify potential audit findings and propose appropriate audit adjustments, a task that demanded both technical audit knowledge and strong professional judgment. It was challenging yet energising, and the process strengthened our teamwork.”
