R programming enthusiasts from the industry and academic circles had a fruitful sharing session at the second R User Group Malaysia conference at an institution of higher learning on 5 October 2019.
The annual event brought together beginners, professionals and experts to share and learn about R programming and gain competency as well as share new ideas or knowledge. R is a programming language that is widely used by statisticians and data miners to develop statistical software and improve data analysis.
TAR UC’s own Ts Dr Yu Yong Poh from the Department of Computer Science and Embedded Systems at the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology delivered an informative talk on ‘Creating Smart Manufacturing Dashboard with R Shiny’ at the event.
“The R Shiny is an R package that makes it easy to build interactive web apps, and these apps will help to improve processes in smart manufacturing,” Dr Yu said. “It can be applied to various functional and business layers, including improving production rules and actions, system controls, and business strategies and environments.”
Dr Yu also explained the application of big data in smart manufacturing. “Big data has many uses in manufacturing, including applications in defect detection, equipment effectiveness, real-time business reporting and visualization, and task scheduling and optimization,” Dr Yu shared. “it can also help to streamline the process of customer feedback, and that plays a big role in the overall quality control process. “
Dr Yu also expressed his contentment with the conference as a whole. “I am very satisfied with how this event has turned out, since it brought together 230 leading industry practitioners and academicians. After the conference, some major companies expressed their interest to collaborate with TAR UC on practical applications of R language, so it was also a success for the UC.”
