Vincent Lui Kok Leong who is currently in his final year of the Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) programme at TAR UMT, is no stranger to triumphing in business challenges at both national and regional levels. He has previously emerged victorious in various competitions. The most recent being the Deloitte Southeast Asia (SEA) Tax Challenge 2023 where he obtained the Champion and Best Presenter Award for the Individual category on 24 March 2023. The other competitions in which he won in the past are Second Runner-Up in the Accounting Competency Challenge 2021, Champion and Best Presenter in EY Young Tax Professional of the Year 2022, Champion Team in Deloitte Audit Business Challenge 2022 and Champion and Best Presenter Award in Deloitte Tax Challenge Malaysia 2022.

For his latest achievement in the Deloitte SEA Tax Challenge 2023, he competed with 4 other individuals from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines, all Champions of their respective countries, to clinch the top prize.

Vincent spoke about the factors that motivated him to emerge victorious in the competition. “I have faith in my abilities and am confident in myself. Having won several competitions in the past, I feel motivated to aim for greater success. And competing at the regional level of this competition is another step forward for me and I wanted to give my best in representing Malaysia.”

When asked about the difficulties he encountered while participating in the competition, he said: “The competition had a tight schedule where we were given only 1.5 hours to complete a lengthy case study and written assessment, followed by a 15-minute presentation of our findings. The case study included a broad range of topics, including international tax, supply chain, transfer pricing, as well as contemporary issues like Base Erosion & Profit Shifting (BEPS), Global Minimum Tax and Digital Taxes,” he said.

The seasoned winner had some good advice for his juniors who would also like to compete and prove themselves. “The objective should be to expand one’s knowledge, gain exposure to new ideas, and demonstrate one’s skills to high-profile judges. While winning is a desirable outcome, it is important to also use the opportunity to network and connect with talented individuals from other universities or countries,” he said.

This young lad’s future plans are to complete the ACCA by June 2023 and then consider a career in either International Tax or consulting practices in taxation.
