TAR College Shell FuelSave 2012 Champs

The “SCHOOL OF SHELL” (S.O.S.) interactive programme to inculcate fuel-saving among Malaysians created by TAR College Advanced Diploma in Mass Communication (Public Relations) students drove away with RM15,000 as champions of the Shell FuelSave College Competition 2012 on 3 December 2012.

The S.O.S. team of 10 TARC final-year PR students impressed judges with their fuel-saving video lectures, car-check practical tips, memory test and a “final exam” in which participants applied these knowledge by playing an online game developed by Shell to “graduate”, complete with certificate, gown and mortar board.

“We created the SCHOOL OF SHELL, S.O.S. tagline to educate participants about the immediate need to save fuel and to reduce pollution. Our win reinforced members’ dedication, discipline and teamwork, which are vital when we join the corporate world,” said Liew Shu En, TARC Shell FuelSave team member.

“We’ve always encouraged and supported our students’ participation in external competitions, which we see as opportunities for them to be competitively trained for employment. We are very proud of their win, which showed students applying practical skills in the real world,” said YBhg Datuk Dr. Tan Chik Heok, TARC Principal.

Shell FuelSave College Competition 2012, organized by Shell Malaysia in collaboration with Media Prima, had invited mass communication students from private colleges to compete in conceptualizing and implementing fuel-efficiency and smart-driving campaigns.

TARC S.O.S. team won via a combination of their pitch presentation, on-ground campaign execution, publicity and online content writing, in addition to obtaining more than 2,000 participants for Shell’s smart-energy-use campaign.

“This campaign serves as a platform for our public relations students to showcase their knowledge via real-life practice, in line with TARC’s mission to prepare our graduates for the industry,” said Mr. Lee Hwee Chuin, TARC School of Social Science and Humanities head.

“Throughout this competition, our PR students put into practice their events management, publicity, marketing and social-media know-how in running an effective campaign within a given budget and deadline” said Ms. Lim Siz Siz, TARC Shell FuelSave campaign advisor.

Shell FuelSave College Competition 2012, held from 22-30 October, had involved five institutions: TARC, Taylor’s University, HELP University College, UCSI and KDU competing for titles and cash prizes.

“Our students were tearfully ecstatic the moment they were announced champions. We educators were excited by their effort in creativity, commitment and cooperation,” said Mr. Chuan Tek Pheung, TARC Programme Supervisor (PR).

This has been TARC’s second participation in the Shell FuelSave College Competition, having clinched the second spot in 2011.
